Individual sections might have a half-dozen musicians playing at once and this would wind up as a single track to be bounced later into a mono mix-down.
There's an entire disc of "Heroes and Villains" segments, another entire CD of "Good Vibrations" source material. In some ways analogous to the Stooges Fun House box, which gathered every scrap from those sessions, the SMiLE Sessions serves as a history lesson about how records were made in the 4- and 8-track era.

But for a core of Beach Boys fanatics who want and need every detail, the complete box set also happens to be a model of how to put together a "sessions" set. For the vast majority of people interested in the Beach Boys, the 2xCD or 2xLP release is all you'll ever need.
